I used to live in a charming place called Mishima in Shizuoka, not far from the majestic Fuji-san. The sight of Fuji-san was a daily ritual for the city’s residents. On any clear day, its stunning presence served as a form of natural therapy, a serene and grounding experience.

You might wonder why I’m reminiscing about this now. Recently, I read an article titled “New Tokyo Condo to be Demolished as it Blocks View of Mt. Fuji”, and it brought back those vivid memories.

In Japan, the sense of community is paramount, and the long-term impact of decisions is deeply respected, whether by individuals or companies. This sense of responsibility to the collective well-being often shapes actions and policies.

In this particular case, a real estate company called Sekisui House developed a condo that unfortunately obstructed the cherished view of Mt. Fuji. Recognizing the community’s value for this iconic sight, they decided to demolish the building. The developer admitted that while there was no legal violation, they failed to sufficiently consider the impact on the area.
